Seafest Jim Ciccone Memorial
3on3 Basketball Challenge Bursary
The Prince Rupert Special Events Society is sponsoring one $500.00 bursary to the secondary schools of School District 52 (SD52) annually, as funds allow. The funds are a result of the Jim Ciccone Memorial 3on3 Basketball Challenge that is held annually during the Seafest community festival.
This bursary is in respect of Jim Ciccone’s contribution of volunteering for his community. The Jim Ciccone Civic Centre was named in his memory in 1996 in recognition to his long and outstanding service to recreation, his service as an elected alderman (City Councillor), as a director on the board of the All Native Basketball Tournament, and his many fine achievements as a homegrown athlete and coach. Jim Ciccone was born in Prince Rupert in 1952 and graduated from Prince Rupert Secondary School. He received provincial honours as a basketball player for the Rainmakers and went on to play basketball for the Simon Fraser Clansmen.
Criteria:
1. The candidate must be a graduating student from a secondary school in SD52 in the current year.
2. The candidate must have been an active player of a senior Charles Hays Secondary School basketball team during grades 10, 11 or 12; Alternatively, they must be an active player of a City of Prince Rupert basketball league in their graduating year.
3. The candidate must have volunteered in their grades 10-12 years at a minimum of two (2) community festivals organized by the Prince Rupert Special Events (Children’s Festival, Seafest, Canada Day, Winterfest). The amount of volunteering time will determine which student will be selected to receive this bursary.
4. The Prince Rupert Special Events Society will affirm the candidates’ volunteer commitments for their eligibility with the SD52 bursary committee prior to the candidates’ selection.
5. The candidate must write a paragraph and include it with their application, expressing what basketball has meant to them, what their most memorable game was and why, and also why they would like to receive this bursary.
6. The selected student must request to receive the bursary within sixteen months of graduation, by November 1st of the year following their Grade 12 graduation. Example: Graduate of June 2020, the latest you can request your bursary is November 01, 2021.
7. The student must submit proof of enrollment at a recognized-accredited post secondary institution. Such proof must be submitted to the Society after the post secondary institution's add/drop deadline for tuition refund, and must clearly show that the student continues to be enrolled in courses at the institution following this deadline.
8. Eligible students may apply for this award by completing and submitting the general application form provided in the SD52 graduation Awards Booklet.

Tuan Hoang Memorial Award
Seafest 4vs4 Grass Volleyball Tournament
Tuan Hoang was an amazing friend, father, brother and son in the community. He was a great role model to many volleyball players in North West British Columbia. In memory of Tuan, an annual $500.00 award will be given to a successful candidate, as funds allow.
The Prince Rupert Special Events Society coordinates the Seafest 4vs4 Grass Volleyball Tournament annually. The funds for this award are from the player registration fees. The main sponsors for this event include local sponsors and Tuan’s friends and family.
Criteria:
1. The candidate must have been a volleyball player on a school team at Charles Hays Secondary School for at least two years.
2. The candidate must be a graduating student from School District 52 in the current year.
3. The candidate must be enrolled in a recognized-accredited post-secondary institution and provide proof of paid course registration and minimum of 30 days of attendance.
4. The selected student must request this award within 16 months of graduation.
5. The candidate must have an average B or higher letter grade in their senior years of grades 11 and 12.
6. The candidate must have shown strong leadership qualities through active community involvement or school activities.
7. The candidate must have volunteered in their grades 10-12 years at a minimum of two (2) community festivals organized by the Prince Rupert Special Events Society (Children’s Festival, Seafest, Canada Day, Winterfest). The amount of volunteering time will determine which student will be selected to receive this bursary.
